Carotid Doppler Ultrasound Scan

ABOUT THIS TEST

The Carotid Doppler Ultrasound Scan is a non-invasive vascular imaging test used to assess blood flow through the carotid arteries in the neck. These arteries supply blood to the brain, and changes in flow can increase the risk of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

This scan is particularly helpful for identifying narrowing (stenosis), plaque build-up, or reduced blood flow within the carotid arteries. Early detection supports preventative care and timely clinical intervention where required.

Suitable for individuals with cardiovascular risk factors, symptoms such as dizziness or visual disturbance, a history of stroke or TIA, or for preventative vascular assessment.

FAQs

1. How can this Scan help me ?

+
This scan can:
Assess blood flow to the brain
Identify narrowing or plaque in the carotid arteries
Support stroke risk assessment
Guide further cardiovascular investigations or treatment
Provide reassurance where findings are normal
It is suitable for individuals with cardiovascular risk factors or neurological symptoms requiring vascular assessment.

2. How is the scan performed?

+
In Clinic:
You will be positioned comfortably on the examination couch
Ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen and scrotal area
A handheld probe is moved gently over each area to capture live images
The procedure is painless and typically takes 25–35 minutes
At Home (Home Visit):
A clinician visits your home with portable ultrasound equipment
The scan is performed in the same way as in clinic, offering added convenience

3. How long do results take?

+
Most carotid Doppler scans take approximately 20–30 minutes.

4. Will I receive help interpreting my results?

+
Yes — every scan includes:
A clinical imaging report
Expert interpretation
Clear recommendations on next steps, if required
